Zynga Announces Plans To Reduce Workforce and Cut 13 Games
Game developer Zynga recently announced its plans on cutting five percent of its workforce.
Founder Mark Pincus sent an email to his staff saying the company was closing its Boston studio and thinking about closing studios in Japan and the UK. He wrote the decision was an effort to reduce costs.
Zynga is the creator of the popular Facebook game Farmville, which logged 82 million players when it was at its peak. Earlier this year, Zynga purchase OMGPOP, its competitor, for nearly $200 million. OMGPOP created “Draw Something!” smartphone app, which is a game industry tracker Appdata and had over 13.3 million players.
Pincus said 13 game titles would also shut down and a reduction with The Ville would also take place. The Ville was released just four months ago and is a spin-off to the game YoVille.
Pincus gave thanks and praise to the staff for their contribution to Zynga. Decisions like this are not taken lightly, he wrote in the email. He noted the impact the shutdown would cause colleagues.
