Wal-Mart Brings Back Free Layaway
Free layaway is coming back to Wal-Mart stores for this holiday season.
According to the Bentonville retailer’s website, free layaway would start on Sept. 13 and run through Dec. 13. The previous $5 fee people were charged to open their layaway accounts is gone but the $10 cancellation fee is returning.
Facebook fans of the retailing giant will gain access to the 35,500 items that can be put into layaway two days early – Sept. 11. About 34,500 items were available for layaway in 2012. The company said the most popular layaway items will be available: toys and electronics like big screen TVs, video games, smartphones and tablets.
Wal-Mart said layaway’s other eligible items will include sporting goods, small appliances and jewelry along with automotive electronics and infant toys, something new for 2013.
Wal-Mart ended its layaway plan in 2006 because of demand falling for the program. However, it was brought back in 2011.
The company did not announce its 2013 Black Friday plans. In 2012, stores around the nation opened its doors at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day to handle the crowds on Black Friday.
The company, earlier in August, cut its yearly revenue and profit for 2013, saying its low-income shoppers are being impacted by the weak worldwide economy.
