Takata Issues Another Large Recall Over Defective Airbags
Takata Corp. has issued the largest automobile recall in the history of the United States – 33.8 million vehicles affected by the defective air bags. This move doubles the amount of cars and trucks that were originally in the recall.
The problem stems from the chemical that causes the air bag to inflate, results an explosion that’s too hard and blowing the metal inflator apart. This explosion sends shrapnel across the vehicle. These defective inflators have resulted in six deaths and over 100 injuries around the world.
The Department of Transportation and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration made the announcement Tuesday, stating it came to an agreement with the Japanese company after a year of fighting over the problem and the size of it.
11 automakers including Toyota Motor Corp, Nissan, and Honda Motor Co. have recalled about 17 million U.S. vehicles and over 36 million around the world. It’s not known which manufacturers have been affected the most.
The recall has put to shame Toyota’s 10 million vehicle recall over the unintended acceleration and General Motor’s 2.6 million of defective ignition switches.
According to Mark Rosekind, NHTSA administrator, the auto industry’s and agency’s investigations have yet to learn why the Takata inflators explode but that the agency isn’t waiting for a cause to fix the problem.
Rosekind said owners are worried about their safety as well as their family’s safety. He said this is one of the most complicated consumer safety recalls in American history.
Rosekind said people who receive recall notices by mail need to get their vehicles fixed right away.
