Sons Of Anarchy Tackles Hard Subject In Sixth Season Premiere Episode
When the sixth season of Sons of Anarchy kicks off, its premiere episode deals with a very touchy subject: school shootings.
Of course, there was some warning sent to viewers. Newtown, Conn. Superintendent of Schools sent parents an email warning the parents of the upcoming episode. Newtown was site of the tragic school shooting late last year, where 26 kids and staff were killed.
He wrote parents, saying, he learned the Sons of Anarchy season premiere is an episode that deals with a teenager who comes into a school with a high-caliber semi-automatic weapon and begins firing. The visual impact of will not be seen, he noted, but viewers will be able to hear the victims cries and the shots.
The superintendent went on to say that the episode could be especially hard for parents, staff members and children. He wrote the email, he said, to warn parents of the episode so they can plan accordingly.
The critics’ reactions have been mixed. One critic said the shooting scenes are too extreme and makes the entire show too nauseating to give a care about.
James Poniewozik with Time said the episode’s violent moment could be a chance for some persistent looks at the violence’s consequences. Although, he said, there’s no way to gauge how the scene will be handled until the show plays for several weeks.
Poniewozik said he hopes the episode isn’t just a plot twist that’s outdone by bigger shockers. He said it would be bad if the show missed an opportunity to educate, moving on like the real world tends to do.
