Sochi Stray Dogs Set To Be Killed Before Olympics Kick Off
A Sochi pest control company has been contracted to kill stray dogs in the city while the Olympics is going on.
According to Basya Servces Director General Alexei Sorokin, the firm has been killing them for years but will ramp up their efforts during this time. Authorities have not stipulated how the dogs are going to be killed – poison or shot – and they did not say what will be done with the remains.
Sorokin said there are thousands of stray dogs in the city; some of the canines have been biting children. While in attendance at an Olympic opening ceremony rehearsal, Sorokin said a stray dog walked in on performers.
He said when it did the animal was caught at Fisht Stadium and taken away. Sorokin said should something like that happen during the actual opening Olympics ceremony, the country would be disgraced.
It’s not uncommon for stray dogs to be seen in Sochi and its surrounding region. Many of the canines will flock to construction sites because workers are likely to give them shelter and food. Many dogs have been able to get into the Olympic Park.
Sorokin did not say how many dogs the firm kills every year, noting that it’s a commercial secret.
Sergei Krivonosov, an attorney from the Krasnodar region where Basya Services is located, supported the response. He said removing the dogs from the street is the country’s responsibility to the international community and the simplest way to address the issue. He said while it may not be humane, authorities have yet to build dog shelters.
When the announcement was made about the contract with Basya Services in catching and killing the dogs, animal activists were up in arms about the move. Authorities said they would build dog shelters for the dogs, but have not done so as of yet.
