Samsung Acquires mSpot to Compete in the Cloud Streaming Market
Samsung has recently acquired mSpot an entertainment start-up that streams movies on computers and mobile devices. Another feature of mSpot is the ability to upload and stream music to play on any Samsung supported device.
According to rumors, the acquisition price is around $ 8.8 million, but both companies did not give any news or comments on this. mSpot already has agreements with various major studios such as Sony, Disney, Warner and Paramount. The full service movies rentals allow users to view various movies on their computer or mobile device. But the most interesting aspect of this service is that when the user changes the device they can continue to view the video from where they stopped.
mSpot also has a locker feature where users can upload music and stream playback on supporting devices. This is similar among other things to what Google offers with Google Music. Finally, mSpot features an interesting radio service à la Spotify and Pandora.
Last week, a top official from Samsung initially announced that the South Korean company is engaged in a takeover. With mSpot in its ranks Samsung will compete with streaming services from Amazon, Apple and Google. Perhaps Samsung will integrate the service with its recently announced Music Hub service. Also there are rumors about their own storage service S-Cloud, where mSpot may play a role.
Whatever Samsung decides to do with mSpot, users can be sure that they will be offered a large choice of entertainment when they purchase a Samsung product. Plus, this seems to be Samsung’s strategy in the near future, which is to increase the sales of digital content other than hardware. With various entertainment studios already signed up with mSpot, Samsung will definitely deliver digital online entertainment to its customers. With these acquisitions and the hardware to back it up, Samsung is planning to become a complete entertainment company.
