Payton Fills In As Palmer’s Caddie
Sean Payton, coach for the New Orleans Saints, has moonlighted as a caddie for Ryan Palmer at the Greenbrier Classic.
Payton said he’s taking the week at The Greenbrier resort to relax before the start of the NFL training camp, when Payton decided to help his friend Palmer by being a caddie. Palmer’s regular PGA Tour caddie was given the day off.
Payton said after two days of being involved in the practice rounds and pro-am events, he noted that he was no longer on vacation. Palmer, who met Payton in Dallas and has four top 10 finishes so far this season, said it was cool to have and hear the mentality of one of the best football coaches in the game with him. Whenever Palmer plays the Zurich Classic in Louisiana, the pair gets together and play several rounds of golf.
Payton said he’s not very good at the game but he can comfortably figure out the yardage during the Greenbrier Classic. Payton compared being Palmer’s caddie to seeing an NFL games through a quarterback’s eyes.
Payton said he knows what game weeks feel like for him during the fall, and he can understand what Palmer and other golfers are going through. He said a caddie is invisible but supportive, which is what he considers important to him.
Palmer said the other caddies have been positively receptive toward Payton. Payton said the discipline to succeed in both golf and football is the same despite how loud a football game gets or how quiet a golf game needs to be. Payton said
Payton said there’s a lot of mind-numbing work that goes unnoticed, and it’s interesting to see how people navigate the course.
The Saints coach, who took his position back in January, said his one-year suspension gave him lots of time to play golf. His team was 7-9 last season and didn’t make the playoffs for the first time in four years.
