Original iPad Mini Disappears From Apple Stores as Focus Shifts to Retina Display Models
The original iPad mini was discontinued from Apple’s online stores signalling the end-of-life for the once highly respected and attractively priced “smaller” tablet that Apple introduced in October 2012. The de-listing on 19th was a quite move and may have gone unnoticed if not for staff at 9to5 blog instantly spotting it.
iPad minis were introduced in 2012 as Apple battled with Samsung for the smaller sized tablet market with a budget price. The iPad mini almost matched the features and power of the iPad 2 but on a smaller form factor, becoming Apple’s most popular product at a certain point of time. Although subsequent iPad mini models were at least $50 more expensive than the original iPad mini, the stunning Retina display, better memory and a faster processor ensured that consumers saw the price difference as reasonable.
Apple will continue to sell the Ipad mini 2 and Ipad mini 3, along with its larger iPad Air tablets. The only difference between iPad mini 2 and iPad mini 3 is the presence of the Touch ID (Fingerprint Identity Sensor) in the latter for the price difference of about $100. A case leak indicates that we might even have an iPad mini 4 very soon. With the original iPad mini gone, all iPad models actively sold by Apple will be using Retina displays and based on 64 Bit Architecture.
Apple subsequently confirmed to TechCrunch, its decision to discontinue of the original iPad mini.
