New York Nanny Remains In Hospital After Allegedly Killing 2 Of Employer’s Children
New York law enforcement are certain that no one else fatally stabbed two Upper West Side children except their 50-year-old nanny Yoselyn Ortega. Still, as of Saturday, Ortega has yet to be charged with a crime, and the reason isn’t because there is a lack of evidence.
In fact, according to police, the deceased children’s mother Marina Krim, came home to find her six-year-old daughter and two-year-old son in the bathroom dead and Ortega slicing her wrists and throat.
The reason, the police say, is that Ortega is still hospitalized at the New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. While she is conscious, she is still intubated and cannot talk. Therefore, investigators are not able to question her at this time.
According to the police department’s chief spokesman Paul J. Browne, an interview must be conducted with the suspect before any charges can be filed under these kinds of circumstances. He said an interview cannot take place with someone who is intubated.
According to toxicology reports, Ortega had no alcohol or narcotics in her system at the time of the alleged killings. Investigators spent Friday searching her apartment.
Relatives for Ortega said the nanny had not been like herself in the last few weeks and was even seeking mental health treatment. They also said Ortega was saddled down with financial problems.
According to police, Ms. Krim left her apartment around 3:15 p.m. to take Nessie – the three-year-old daughter – to a swimming lesson on Amsterdam Avenue. According to Krim, Ortega and the children – Leo and Lucia – were supposed to meet the mother at a West 68th Street dance studio where Lucia had a lesson. Krim arrived at 4:45 p.m. and did not see them.
Thinking she just missed them, she returned to the apartment and found Ortega putting a butcher knife to her throat and her two other children in the bathtub dead.
