New LG LCD Display Enters the Stage as the Thinnest

LG Display introduced its new thin LCD display with HD quality and sporting a thickness of only 2.2 millimeters. The announcement came from the company during the week of 8 July, 2013. LG Display is based in Seoul, South Korea and is the world’s largest manufacturer of LCD panels.

Although not yet available on LG smartphones, it is expected to appear on models of the Google Nexus 5 and LG Optimus G2. The release of these smartphones with the ultra-thin display is expected to appeal to consumer desires for lighter and thinner devices.

The manufacturer refers to this technology as Advanced One-Glass Solution. Characteristic of this technology is combination of both the cover glass and the touch screen layer essentially making them one unit.

Benefits realized by this technology include reduction in complexity, a brighter display, and reduced costs to manufacture. The reduced costs are a direct result of a simpler design when it comes to the display. This is because the display and touch screen usually make up the bulk of the expense to manufacture a smartphone.

The 5.2 inch display with 1920 x 1080 resolution allows a 1080 pixel display in future smartphones. The display is also brighter with the capability to deliver at rating of 535 nits thus improving visibility when outdoors.

A nit is a unit for measuring the luminance of light and represents one candela per square meter. When referring to the luminance of LCD displays, the term nit is used.

Adding to the thin feature of this display is a bezel that has a thickness of only 2.3 millimeters. The bezel on a smartphone display is the frame of the screen and protects against damage from dropping, shields input from side sources such as a thumb, and helps with visual appeal.

With the announcement by LG Display of this new thin screen design, a preview of LG’s Optimus G2 leaked last week. It uses the same 5.2-inch 1080 pixel display and its thin design requires placing buttons on the back of the unit.

Rumors have it that the new Optimus G2 will be released in South Korea in mid-late August with no word yet as to when it will appear on other markets.
