MSN TV Goes Dark Sept. 30
Microsoft’s MSN TV is set to be unplugged come Sept. 30. The service, previously known as WebTV, began in the mid-1990s and was the initial set-top box services that provide people Internet access through their television sets.
In 1996, Web entrepreneur Steve Perlman founded WebTV, which was attained by Microsoft in a $425 million bid in 1997.
WebTV gave consumers television based Web browsing and e-mail through a wireless keyboard. However, it fought to gain power with them. In 2001, Microsoft rebranded WebTV to MSN TV to quickly integrate it with the rest of its products like MSN Hotmail and Messenger.
Microsoft even tried to offering free interactive services for people new to the MSN online service. However, with the release of the Xbox game console, the MSN TV service took a backseat.
The company said the contributing factor to the demise of MSN TV is people’s numerous abilities to access the Internet.
Apple is currently places emphasis on its set-top box, with a possible deal with Time Warner Cable. The deal would bring in a tremendous number of new channels to Apple TV. Apple TV, last month, was able to attain Disney’s WatchESPN and Time Warner’s HBO GO apps.
