Matze Out As Parler CEO
John Matze, CEO and founder of Parler, announced top Republican donor Rebekah Mercer fired him from the popular conservative social media app.
The app, a favorite among former president Donald Trump supporters, had been shut down after tech giants pulled the plug following the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and violence.
According to the memo he sent to his employees, Parler’s board of directors insisted on his removal, and he was not a part of the decision-making process. Matze said he’s been meeting with continued resistance to his vision of Parler, including his stance on free speech and how the site should be handled.
He said he asked for more product stability and what he sees as a practical approach to content moderation.
Before its takedown, there were about 15 million Parler users, which grew in immense popularity with conservatives after President Joe Biden defeated the incumbent president Donald Trump. Users flocked to the app after a multitude of social media platforms sanctioned Trump for repeatedly claiming the election was rigged and stolen.
Parler only uses part-time jurors as moderators, even though it claims not to allow criminal activity or threats.
Once Twitter and Facebook banned Donald Trumps’ account, there was a considerable rise in the number of Parler downloads. However, Amazon Web services booted the service from its servers after the Capitol was attacked.
Matze said he would think about his next move after taking some time away. He said he’ll look for new ventures that can use his technical skills and visions that align with his passions. Matze thanked those who supported him and the Parler platform. He said he wasn’t saying goodbye, just bye for now.
