Man Injured During Shark Attack On Hawaii
A private community was left shaken after a 25-year-old man was injured in a shark attack while paddle boarding at Kukio Beach on Hawaii’s west coast.
According to reports, the man is a resident of the Kukio Golf and Beach Club.
The young man was with his father when the incident. The pair were just 150 yards from the shore when the shark swam up and attacked him.
There are no county lifeguards, but the beach was being visited by a private safety team.
Michael Grace, captain of the fire department, said the private safety team heard screaming from the ocean and a four-man canoe rode out to see the person has been bumped off the paddle board. They were able to pull him to safety and noticed he sustained injuries to the right side of his body.
According to Grace, staff members and bystanders placed tourniquets on the injuries until emergency responders could arrive.
The man was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital by helicopter. According to a hospital spokesperson, he was in surgery and would be transferred to Queens Medical Center, located on the island of Oahu.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources said the last shark attack on the Big Island took place in 2015. There were four injuries in that incident.
Officials have cautioned beachgoers to be mindful of their surroundings while in the water. Grace said everybody should have a partner with them while in the water. He said the attack could have been much worse if he hadn’t been for the young man’s father being with him.
DLNR has closed the beach until noon Sunday.
