Live Long and Prosper… Leonard Nimoy Dead at 83
The world is in mourning from the news that the actor who played the beloved Mr. Spock from the Star Trek series died. Leonard Nimoy died from end-stage COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) at his home. He was 83 years old.
His wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, announced her husband’s death Friday morning. Nimoy made the announcement last year that he was sick and often would talk about it. A week after he announced he was suffering with COPD, he wrote on Twitter: “Just can’t walk distances. Love my life, family, friends and followers. In the last few years, he had become extremely active on the social media platform.
Earlier in the week, Nimoy was hospitalized. Many of the former co-stars such as George Takei sent him their well wishes.
Nimoy played the part of Spock for 40 years, taking the role back up in 2009’s “Star Trek” and again in 2013 with “Star Trek Into Darkness”. Besides his Spock work, he was in the director’s chair for various films like “The Search for Spock”, “The Voyage Home” and “3 Men and A Baby.”
Besides, playing the lovable Vulcan Mr. Spock, he was an talented voice actor, being heard in various TV shows like “Atlantis: The Lost Empire”, “The Simpsons” and “Transformers: The Movie”. He was also a voice actor in video games. He recently played the recurring role of William Bell on Fringe.
Through Dot Records, he released five albums – one he had borrowed from his Spock days “Leonard Nimoy Presents Mr. Spock’s Music from Outer Space”.
Nimoy is survived by his wife, Susan two children from his marriage from actress Sandra Zobler, his grandchildren and stepson.
