Hyundai Issues Recall For Sonata Mid-Sized Sedans Over Faulty Cable
Hyundai Motor Co. has issued a recall of nearly 883,000 Sonata mid-sized sedans sold in the United States as well as Puerto Rico due to a possible faulty transmission-shift cable that can lead to a crash.
The company’s recall affects certain 2011-2014 Sonata vehicles where the transmission-shift cable could possibly come apart from the shift-lever pin. According to the federal safety regulator, this could result in the gear selection not matching up to the designated gear.
In documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the defect may cause the vehicles to move in directions that are not intended.
In documents, Hyundai revealed there have been more than 1,100 warranty claims and seven incidents due to the issue. A company spokesman said Hyundai was not aware of issue-related injuries, accidents or fatalities.
The report noted that a driver could put the vehicle in park but it may not actually “be in park”. This could lead to the vehicle rolling away. At no cost to owners, dealers will take a look at and repair the shift cable and shift lever connection.
NHTSA documents stipulate that roughly 880,000 of the affected vehicles were sold in the U.S. while the remaining was sold in Puerto Rico.
In a separate recall, Hyundai has recalled more than 5,600 2015 Sonatas sold in both the U.S. and Puerto Rico due to cracking front-brake calipers. This could lead to less effective brakes and increase the possibility of an accident.
In this recall, Hyundai is not aware of any crashes, injuries or deaths associated with the problem. Less than 200 of the vehicles are in people’s hands and dealers have been told not to sell the affected vehicles until repairs have been made.
The company made affected owners aware last month of the problem, telling them not to drive their vehicles. The calipers will be replaced by dealers for nothing.
