Huntsman Allegedly Strangled or Suffocated Six Babies Over 10-Year Period
Spanning over the course of a decade, Megan Huntsman gave birth to seven babies in her Pleasant Grove, Ut. home. Huntsman told police one of the babies died when it was born; the other six were suffocated or strangled. The infants’ bodies were placed in boxes and stored in the garage.
The 39-year-old is being held on a $6 million bail – making it $1m per child she’s accused of murdering. Utah County prosecutors will file formal charges against her next week.
In the probable cause affidavit authorities released, Huntsman said she gave birth to seven children between 1996 and 2006. Each one was wrapped in a shirt or towel, put into a plastic bag and placed into their own cardboard box, which were stored in the garage.
Court papers did not lay out a motive. And, the statement doesn’t explain how she managed to avoid questioning neighbors and her older children.
In the affidavit, police responded to the Pleasant Grove home on a report that a dead baby was found in the garage. Pleasant Grove is located about 35 miles from Salt Lake City. The complaint came from Darren West, who is Huntsman’s estranged husband. He was convicted of drug-related charges.
According to Michael Roberts, police captain for the Pleasant Grove police department, officers think Huntsman and West were together when each child was born.
Roberts said officers think West had no prior knowledge of the incident, but couldn’t really explain how he could not have known.
West allegedly confronted Huntsman who admitted she was the mother of the dead baby and it had been born dead. That’s when West got in touch with authorities.
According to the affidavit, the body had been well-preserved and looked to be full-term. A search warrant was issue for the home, and six other infant bodies were found.
The remains are being examined to learn exactly what manner of death these infants faced. On top of that, DNA is being conducted to confirm the parents.
Huntsman’s children – two young adult daughter and one teenager daughter – lived in the home. On Sunday, the family released a statement, which said they were in confused and shocked by the discovery. They asked for privacy during this time.
