GM Recalls Cars For Potential Fire Hazard In Parking Brake System
General Motors Co. is making another recall – this time the issue involves a defect in the vehicles’ parking brake which could result in a fire.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem has been found in 2013 to 2015 Cadillac XTS and 2014-2014 Chevrolet Impala sedans.
The company said the number of vehicles being recalled into 221,558, which includes 205,309 in the United States, with the rest being done in Canada and other countries. It said GM was not aware of any accidents, injuries or deaths related to the defect.
The problem stems from the brake’s indicator light not illuminating even though the brake wasn’t completely retracted after use.
According to the NHTSA, a vehicle that operates with the parking brake on for an extended period of time places undue stress on the rear brakes, causing it to produce a significant amount of heat, sparks and smoke. Brake pads that are partially touching the rotors could cause an excessive amount of brake heat and cause a fire.
David Friedman, deputy administrator with the NHTSA, criticized the U.S. vehicle manufacturing company for failure to quickly report and recall vehicles over their problems with the ignition switches that have caused the deaths of 19 people.
Just this year, the company has recalled about 15 million vehicles over the ignition switch problem.
