Fiat Chrysler Issues Recall For Faulty Ignition Switches
Fiat Chrysler has begun a major safety recall of more than 700,000 sports utility vehicle and minivans in the U.S. over faulty ignition switches.
The vehicles set in the recall are the 2008 through 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country minivans. The 2009 to 2010 Dodge Journey SUVs are also being recalled. The problem could cause engines to suddenly turn off.
The company is also telling all its customers to remove all items from the key rings, leaving just the key itself in the ignition until the vehicle can be given to the mechanics for repair. It said the key fob should also be removed from the ring based on documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Fiat Chrysler said rough road conditions or a sudden jolt could result in the ignition switch to turn off or into the accessory position. This cuts off the engine and disables the power steering, power brakes and air bags.
The recall, according to the company, will begin in April for the 2008 and 2009 vehicles. The 2010 vehicles are set for recall in August. This may panic some vehicle owners because they have to wait their turn to get the vehicle repaired so the ignition switches work as they should and won’t lead to a potential deadly car accident.
This isn’t the first issue for Fiat Chrysler. Some vehicles have experienced a similar issue in the past, which makes it clear that the faulty ignition switch is a persistent issue.
Many automakers have experienced this same issue in the last few years. General Motors, for instance, recalled 2.6 million vehicles in 2014 after 57 people died and 90 drivers and passengers had been injured believed to be the result of the defective ignition switch in those vehicles.
