FDA Issues Warning Over Health Life Chemistry Supplement
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning on Friday regarding the dietary supplement Healthy Life Chemistry by Purity First B-50. The B-50 product is promoted as a vitamin B dietary supplement.
U.S. Health regulators made this announcement in response to 29 reports of issues related to use of the product. It was discovered that the product contains two dangerous anabolic steroids, methasterone and dimethazine. Methasterone is a controlled substance.
Mira Health Products Ltd., the Farmingdale, New York based manufacturer of the product, refused to make a voluntary recall of the supplement. Subsequently, the FDA reported that the company is subject to criminal prosecution if it will not halt sales of B-50.
Reactions to methasterone and dimethazine yield symptoms such as muscle pain, muscle cramping, hair growth in unusual places, and menstrual cycle disruptions. There is also incidence of impotence in men taking the product.
It is also noted that the steroids can produce abnormal results when testing thyroid function, liver function, and cholesterol levels.
They can also affect blood lipid levels adversely. Blood lipids are fatty acids and when their levels become elevated there is increased risk for a heart attack or stroke to occur.
Use of these steroids also presents an increased risk for long-term conditions such as liver injury, low testosterone, enlarging of the breasts, and male infertility.
B-50 is sold in various stores and online. In addition to not recalling the product, Mira Health Products has not warned consumers of these potential dangers. Furthermore, the presence of these steroids is not listed on the product’s labeling.
The FDA asks that health care professionals ask patients what dietary supplements they are taking when they are seen for conditions that could indicate the presence of the steroids. Conditions such as blood clots, pulmonary embolism, kidney failure, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and liver injury could be signals of use of B-50.
