Europe Sets Price Cap for Mobile Internet Use Overseas
Tariffs for the use of mobile Internet abroad this summer will receive a maximum rate or price cap. The European Parliament has decided to implement this after growing protests from mobile Internet users of their growing data costs. In addition to the maximum rates, starting from 2014 users from each country of the European Union must choose a single provider for roaming.
The maximum charges for roaming in Europe were already known, but now the majority in the European Parliament agreed to a proposal from the European Commission. Thus providers must adhere to these maximum rates, because the law now enforces them. Previously, the proposal with the rates came from various consumer groups.
This is the first time that a price cap on mobile Internet within the European Union has been established. On the other hand, there were already maximum prices for talk time minutes and texts. Also, travelers are now protected in the sense that the provider warns the user if the phone bill is over 60 Euros with a specific message. The user must take action by giving consent to roam. That should prevent users from getting high bills for roaming.
Starting from 2014 if users wish to go on a trip anywhere in the European Union, for example a holiday, a roaming package with a local provider may not be necessary. Now customers can use their own provider since there is a price cap for mobile Internet use.
