England Newborn Tests Positive For COVID-19
Doctors have learned that a newborn baby has contracted the coronavirus, which is believed to be the youngest person to have this disease. And, it’s causing some alarm among the medical community.
The mother was taken to a north London hospital a few days before the child’s birth with what doctors felt was pneumonia. However, she tested positive for the coronavirus.
According to the NHS trust, two patients had tested positive for the virus. Staff who had close contact with them during treatment are now being asked to self-quarantine themselves.
What is concerning experts is how the child contracted the disease. Was it while the baby was in the womb or did the child become infected at birth? The baby is currently in the hospital for treatment while the mother was sent to a special infectious hospital.
In a statement released by the North Middlesex university hospital, two of its patients were tested for the coronavirus and found to be positive. One is being isolated in a treatment room with another sent to a specialist center. Patient and staff safety is the key priority and, working alongside the Public Health England, the hospital is continuously deep cleaning areas patients are treated and staff who come into contact with positive patients are asked to quarantine themselves.
England’s Chief Medical Officer Prof. Chris Whitty said earlier pregnant women didn’t need to worry so much about the coronavirus, and that there’s no evidence to suggest the virus is transmitted through breast milk.
