End Of The World: Facebook Crashes Early Thursday, Causing Panic Among Millions Of Users
It may have seemed like the end of the world for millions of Facebook users Thursday morning when, around 3 a.m. Central Time, the site crashed for 30 minutes. Yes, the social media 1.2 billion users were unable to check their accounts and were greeted with the message “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can”.
For Facebook, it was the longest outage to date. Within an hour, the site was back up and fully functional.
A Facebook spokesperson said the website had an issue that didn’t let people post content for a short period of time. However, personnel worked quickly to address the issue and the site is back to normal. The spokesperson said Facebook apologizes for the inconvenience people endured.
Of course, news of the outage spread like wildfire, using Twitter, to express their aggravations. Some users mocked the culture of being unable to handle life without checking Facebook immediately upon waking up.
One person tweeted that it forced people to consume their food without taking a picture of it. Another person said a moment of silence was needed for those folks who had to have face to face interaction.
Despite the sarcasm, there is some legitimacy behind their frustration. After all, the popular social media website rules a good part of people’s Internet social lives, and never crashes. In fact, the idea that it’s always going has become a social norm.
One of the important issues that were raised over the outage was the vast amount of information Facebook has on its users. In fact, for many people, Facebook tends to be the first place people go for personal data.
