Chrysler Recalls Nearly 469,000 Jeeps Over Software Issue
Chrysler has begun recalling roughly 469,000 Jeeps around the world, with approximately 295,000 of them being in the United States due to the transmission’s ability to shift from park to neutral by itself.
The models affected by the recall include the 2006 through 2010 Jeep Commanders and the 2005 to 2010 Grand Cherokees. According to Eric Mayne, a Chrysler spokesman, the defect has caused 26 accidents with two injuries. He said it’s not known how severe those injuries were but there have been no fatal accidents involved with the recall part.
Chrysler made the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) aware that the problem is with the software that could tell the starting vehicle’s transmission to go into neutral.
The company learned of the problem nearly a year and half ago after a Grand Cherokee owner using the remote-start feature complained the vehicle went into neutral.
According to the automaker, the software to fix the issue was developed in December but testing for it wasn’t complete until March.
Chrysler said it’s a voluntary recall. However, after a manufacturer learns of a safety issue, the company must let the safety agency know if it’ll do a recall in five business days or be assessed a civil fine.
