Alleged Penn. Cop Killer Captured
Eric Frein, the alleged cop killer in Pennsylvania was captured Thursday around 6 p.m. at Tannersville’s abandoned Birchwood Pocono Airpak. According to Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Col. Frank Noonan, police found a pistol and rifle in the hangar.
Noonan said the 31-year-old, who was shocked by the capture, was in very good condition after spending nearly 50 days in the wild. When asked who he was, Frein gave his actual name. Sam Rabadi, Philadelphia’s office of Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives chief, said Frein had all his guns and bombs taken away along with his freedom.
Frein allegedly ambushed State Police Cpl. Bryon Dickson and Trooper Alex Douglass, killing Dickson and injuring Douglass on Sept. 12 at the Blooming Grove barracks. Until Thursday’s capture, all police had of the suspect was a diary entry, two homemade pipe bombs, an AK-47 and several campsites.
When questioned about how long it took to capture Frein, Noonan said the wooded area was expansive and the suspect knew the region and knew of places he could hide easily from authorities. He said search teams needed to be extremely methodical since Frein was a man on a mission, which was to kill law enforcement. Noonan said law enforcement were worried that Frein would come out of the woods to shoot additional law enforcement.
Frein was taken to the scene of the original crime for booking where he waits for official arraignment of the charges, which includes but may not be limited to:
- First-degree homicide
- Attempted murder
- Homicide of a law enforcement officer
- Possession of weapons of mass destruction
Noonsan said it does not appear, at the moment, that Frein had accomplice during and after the ambush.
Nearly 1,000 local, state and federal officials had joined the manhunt to find Frein.
