Major Fruit Recall: California Company Recalls Fruit Due To Listeria Contamination
A voluntary nationwide fruit recall from a California packing company is in progress right now due to listeria contamination.
The affected fruit include the following:
- Whole white or yellow peaches
- White or yellow nectarines
- Plums
- Pluots (apricot-plum hybrids)
These fruits were packaged from June 1 to July 12.
The recall was prompted after Wawona Packaging Co. in Cutler, Calif. tested the fruit and found they were contaminated with listeria, an organism that’s extremely dangerous for people with weakened immune systems, young children and the elderly.
Listeria is also dangerous for pregnant women because it can cause stillbirths and miscarriages.
Wawona Packing began notifying retailers of the problem, which included many major stores: Sam’s Club, Costco, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and Save-A-Lot.
Healthy individuals who eat the tainted fruit could experience short-term symptoms like stomach pain, diarrhea, high fever, stiffness, severe headache and nausea.
People who suspect they have the recalled fruit should not consume them and throw them out.
To date, there have been no reported illnesses from the large batch of contaminated fruit.
