15-Year-Old Shooting Survivor Speaks At Family’s Memorial, Saying She’ll See Her Family Again

Cassidy Stay, the 15-year-old girl and lone survivor of her ex-uncle’s rampage, remembers her parents and siblings in a memorial held Saturday.

Stay made her first public appearance after the deadly shooting on Wednesday that took the lives of both her parents and four younger brothers and sisters. Cassidy was also shot in the head but played dead until the alleged shooter Ronald Haskell left the home. She then called police to warn them that Haskell was on his way to kill her grandparents.

Cassidy, who was released from the hospital Friday, was on stage with her grandfather Roger Lyon for a ceremony that honored the six victims.

Cassidy’s father Stephen Stay, her mother Katie Stay and her siblings that ranged from 4 to 13 were killed execution-style at their Spring, Texas home. She said, with tears in her eyes, that she knows her parents, and Becca, Brian, Emily and Zach or in a better place and that she’ll see them one day again.

Cassidy said she feels much better and is making her way to a complete recovery.

The teenager who is really into Harry Potter pulled a quote from the books saying, “‘Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.'”

Cassidy’s grandfather praised the young girl for her bravery and actions, calling her a hero.

Due to her phone call to 911, police were able to stop Haskell before he had a chance to carry out his deadly rampage.

Lyon said without Cassidy’s quick-thinking and courage, the family could be mourning the loss of 20 people – himself and other children and grandchildren included.

Haskell, 33, was once married to Cassidy’s aunt, and on Wednesday, alleged forced his way into her home, dressed as a FedEx delivery driver and demanded the family to tell him where his ex-wife was. When they claimed not to know, he lined the whole family up and shot each one in the back of the head.

Haskell had his first appearance in court Friday where he fell to the ground as each charge was read against him. No plea has been entered but Doug Durham, his attorney, said his mental health would definitely have a role in the criminal case.
