Star Wars Actor Hurt In Door Malfunction, Suffers Fractured Ankle
Star Wars actor Harrison Ford was injured on the set of Star Wars: Episode VII and was airlifted to the hospital after a hydraulic door fell and crushed him.
Ford, 71, was in Buckinghamshire’s Pinewood studios when the accident took place. Medics immediately assessed his condition at the studio’s M Stage where the Millennium Falcon was set up. Additional treatment was deemed warranted and the actor was whisked away by a stretcher to a helicopter.
According to a South Central Ambulance Service spokeswoman, they were called out to Pinewood studios around 4:30 p.m. about a 71-year-old man who may have injured his ankle from a falling door.
Ford was taken to Oxford’s John Radcliffe hospital with a suspicion of a fractured ankle. Additional tests were done to rule out chest injuries.
It’s not clear how long Ford will be not be available for filming, but that his schedule could become disrupted. The Star Wars set is being checked once again for safety issues and possible violations. An investigation into the accident has been launched by the Health and Safety Executive.
A Disney franchise owner spokesman said Ford did sustain an ankle injury while he worked on the filming of the latest Star Wars movie, and was transported to the hospital for care and is currently recovering from the accident.
Shooting of the movie will continue as he gets better, which includes three of the key Star Wars cast members – Luke Skywalker (played by Mark Hamill), Princess Leia (played by Carrie Fisher) and Han Solo (played by Harrison Ford).
Star Wars: Episode VII is set for release December 2015.
