People Urged To Throw Away Evergreen Fresh Sprouts Products

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people are being urged not to eat Evergreen Fresh Sprouts’ raw clover sprouts after various reports that people have gotten sick with E. coli in Idaho and Washington.

The report states there are seven confirmed cases with three possible cases of the Shiga toxin-producing E. coli from both states.  The CDC is working in conjunction with Idaho and Washington’s public health officials and the Food and Drug Administration to probe the multi-state outbreak.

Dr. Kathy Lofy, a Washington state health officer, said her state is asking people to not eat raw clover spouts from the company until additional notice is given. She said if people have these foods in their home, they need to throw them away.

Health officials said that even though the preliminary investigations links the E. coli outbreak to Evergreen Fresh Spouts’ products, the root of the infection is still not known.  They have advised people with compromised immune systems not to eat foods under the brand.

Lofy said any person who believes they became sick after eating the contaminated sprouts needs to speak with their doctor or other healthcare provider. The very young and elderly are the most susceptible to becoming very sick from the Shiga toxin-producing E. coli infection.

Several common symptoms of E. coli are: bloody diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps and vomiting. It can become severe and be deadly.

Sprouts are known in the healthy food industry, often added to salads and sandwiches for their beneficial low-calorie advantages. In 2011, a CBC commissioned study written by Kevin Allen, noted that warm, moist conditions are needed to grow sprouts, which is the same conditions bacteria needs to grow and thrive.

Out of the 44 samples tested, 78 percent had an extensive number of microorganisms – too numerous to count. He said one sample also had E. coli growing along with E. faecalis and E faecium.

According to other studies, the bacteria may contaminate sprouts when the plants grow in the manure-enriched fields or within sprouting facilities.
