MERS Virus Claims Yet Another Life; Death Toll Exceeds 65
The MERS virus, which has been linked to camels, has claimed more than 65 lives in Saudi Arabia, causing a panic with health workers.
According to the country’s health ministry, the latest death is of a foreigner visiting Saudi Arabia. The agency announced eight others were recently found to be infected with MERS. Of the eight, five of them are health workers. The 45-year-old man’s nationality was not disclosed, but he died in Jeddah.
MERS’ origin is an enigma for scientists. However, a study in February suggests camels could have a part in its spread. MERS has a close relation to the SARS virus (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome).
On Friday, the World Health Organization said it knew of more than 210 confirmed MERS cases; 88 of which died.
