Old Man Winter Strikes Once Again, Travelers Weary From The Cold and Wet Stuff

Air travelers across the country are scrambling to find flights to and from their destination after Old Man Winter struck once again the first weekend and week of March.

As of 9 a.m. March 3, more than 2,000 flights were cancelled. On Sunday, approximately 2,000 flights had been cancelled.  At D.C.’s Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, 60 percent of the flights were cancelled early Monday with over 500 cancellations. At the Philadelphia International Airport, about a third of its schedule (or about 400 flights) was cancelled.

According to Sean Morris, a CNN meteorologist, heavy snow in the D.C. area is delaying the majority of flights in and out of Dulles and Reagan. Since many of the flights were cancelled before the storm struck, there are not many travelers stuck at the airport. Many people have postponed any travel plans they had.

Morris said the good news is that the storm moved further south, ensuring New York did not get the brunt of the storm and that Philadelphia didn’t get as much as forecasters had feared. He said only three to six inches of snow is forecasted now with New York City experiencing flurries.

Morris continued saying the storm should be over with quickly with snow ending by sunset, allowing crews to clear runways and allowing flights to resume their schedule by Tuesday morning.

The relentless bad weather has taken a toll on the airlines with United Airlines canceling more than 20,000 flights in the last two months. JetBlue Airways said its profits would suffer because of the weather cancellations.
