CHP Officer Detains Firefighter For Failure To Comply With Order
A firefighter from Southern California found himself in handcuffs after he did not agree with a request presented to him from a highway patrol officer on where to park the fire engine.
Engineer Jacob Gregoire from the Chula Vista Fire Department, was detained by the California Highway Patrol for approximately 30 minutes upon refusal to remove his engine because it was blocking one lane of the 805 Interstate to protect ambulance crews who were treating the injured people of a rollover accident.
Firefighters from two other engines were asked to leave the scene by the same officer, which they did.
Fire Chief Dave Hanneman was standing by the remaining crew, saying he didn’t know what the officer was thinking because the engineer was doing exactly what they were taught – ensuring that patient care was given and that the scene was protected.
A meeting between Chula Vista officials and the CHP occurred Wednesday. After the meeting, a joint statement called the detention an isolated and ill-fated incident and not representative of how the agencies work together when they have a common goal. It also stated the incident would be a topic at additional training sessions the two agencies have together.
