Law & Order: SVU Tackles 2 High-Profile and Controversial Headlines In New Season Episode
When Law & Order: SVU returns to TV, you’re going to notice some familiar, headlining cases. After all, the show and its executives have never been ones to shy away from the real-life stories.
According to Warren Leight, SVU’s executive producer, for an upcoming episode, the show is going to tackle the Paula Deen controversy and the George Zimmerman trial.
Leight said defense attorney Jeffrey Tambor will represent a high-profile celebrity female chef who believes she’s being stalked by a rapist, and turns around shoots, only to learn it’s a teenager.
He said there’s going to be plenty of stop and frisk rudiments to the situation.
The chef will be portrayed by Cybil Shepherd with Leslie Odom Jr. (Smash) playing the minister of the child killed. The episode will be number three in the season.
Some of the pictures that were released from the set of the popular show implied there was a Trayvon Martin-like episode. In one still, actors are seen holding signs during a protect that was similar to ones that took place during and after the Florida trial.
Leight said the episode will face the tough questions head on:
– Is it justified to do racial profiling?
– Can self-defense include racial profiling?
He said the issue can occur anywhere including New York.
Law & Order: SVU is slated to return NBC Sept. 25 at 9 p.m. E.T. with a two-hour premiere.
