Potentially Serious Airbag Recall Affects Popular Vehicle Manufacturers

Popular vehicle manufacturers – Honda, Nissan and Toyota – are recalling over three million vehicles around the world for a problem with their passenger-side airbags that could burst, which would send plastic fragments airborne.

About 1.7 million Toyota vehicles are being recalled; 580,000 of these are in North America. 1.1 million Honda vehicles are affected, with 107,000 of those vehicles being in Canada. Nissan has 480,000 vehicles affected around the world and Mazda has 45,000 vehicles it’s recalling.

According to Honda Canada, the problem exists because of the airbag inflators, which were manufactured by the Japanese company Takata Corp. The airbags could deploy with so much force that the inflator could rupture, leading to potential injuries.

Honda said one crash was a result of this problem. However, the company was unaware if there are any injuries or deaths.

81,000 Honda Civics are being recalled in Canada, approximately 11,000 2001-2003 Acura 1.7 EL vehicles, more than 6,100 2002-2003 CR-V vehicles and nearly 10,000 2002 Odysseys are also affected by this latest recall.

In Japan, Honda has 270,000 vehicles affected and, in Europe, 64,000 vehicles are noted in the recall.

Toyota has 490,000 vehicles in Europe and, in Japan, 320,000 vehicles included in this recall. The affected Toyota models include the popular Corolla, Lexus SC and Tundra, manufactured November 2000 through March 2004.

Honda said affected vehicle owners should take the vehicles to an authorized dealer upon getting notification that their vehicle is affected by this recall. Notifications will begin by mail in May.
