Rumor: Google In Talks To Purchase Cross Platform Messaging Application WhatsApp
Google is reportedly in talks with WhatsApp to acquire the popular cross-platform messaging application. That’s according to the latest Digital Trend report.
According to the report, the two companies have been talking for about five weeks. A source close to the negotiations said WhatsApp is playing hardball, increasing the acquisition price to close to $1 billion.
WhatsApp is regarded as an extremely popular messaging application for mobile users, using on the majority of mobile platforms – Android, BlackBerry, iOs and Windows Phone. It allows users to send video, audio and image messages as well as instant messages to each other.
WhatsApp allows people the ability to cross-platform text without having to pay for SMS.
WhatsApp, in January, announced it set a personal record on Dec. 31 with seven billion incoming messages being sent. During that same time, an additional 11 billion outgoing messages were sent. The previous one-day total for the application was 10 billion messages.
Is WhatsApp really selling for $1 billion? $1 billion was the price Facebook paid to acquire Instagram last year and many folks feel the deal didn’t help the popular social network.
Although WhatsApp is popular, it doesn’t hold the same type of power Instagram had during its acquisition, which caused it to be valued so high. Of course, as it stands, there is just one source in the Digital Trends report. Whether it’s true or not, that remains to be seen.
