Concerns Of Possible Blackout Raised Before Super Bowl
Both the Superdome’s engineering staff and local utility agency Entergy New Orleans were worried about the possibility of a Super Bowl blackout and had voiced their concerns to Superdome officials.
Their concerns were justified, as during the Ravens-49ers game on Sunday, the game was delayed for about 35 minutes during the third quarter. The outage’s cause is still being investigated.
$1 million in state funds was given for upgrades to the Superdome with $600,000 of it for feeder cable work.
The New Orleans facility hurriedly worked to replace the old electrical feeders during the concerns about lights failing during the key NFL game.
The work was completed during December, just weeks before the big game on Feb. 3.
The Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District said the improvements were necessary to ensure the Superdome and New Orleans arena were in tip-top shape and that no electrical issues would occur during the Super Bowl.
Officials have stated the halftime show and city’s power demand were not the cause for the blackout.
