UPDATE 1-Kidnapper/Murderer Dead, Boy Alive and Doing OK
Jimmy Lee Dykes, the 65-year-old man who killed a school bus driver and abducted a five-year-old autistic boy in Midland City, Al. and held him in a bunker for seven days, is dead. According to authorities, the child is unharmed.
Dykes, who was a retired truck driver, was killed late Monday afternoon – although it’s not clear how he died. An ambulance – without its lights and siren – could be seen leaving the area where Dykes and the five-year-old were.
According to reports from a neighbor who lives approximately one-fourth of a mile from the property, there was at least one bang – maybe two – on the property that was then followed up with a gunshot
Federal law enforcement said action was taken after authorities grew concerned about Dykes mental state and its deterioration. The official said authorities weren’t going to take risks but noted things weren’t progressing in the right way.
The unidentified official is described as being ok.
Authorities said they had talked with Dykes by way of a ventilation pip and identified the boy as Ethan, supplying him with crayons, coloring books, toy cars, cheese crackers and potato chips.
On Wednesday, Ethan will be six-years-old.
