BMW Issues Recall For 35,000 X5 SUVs
North American BMW is set to recall approximately 35,000 X5 utility vehicles with diesel engines in the United States and Canada due to a power steering issue.
The problem affects the 2009 through 2012 models, manufactured from Sept. 1, 2008 through Nov. 15, 2012. Federal safety officials have said an engine part may potentially break off and cause the loss in power steering. BMW remarked the problems stems from the engine belt idler pulley bolt, and the sudden loss of the power steering could increase the possibility of an accident.
BMW’s recall states the alternator warning light will light up when the power loss occurs. Although there is no power steering, the SUV can be driven still but drivers must put in the extra effort.
The problem was discovered during a warranty claim at a Canadian dealership about two years ago. To date, there has been no crashes or injuries reported in either the U.S. or Canada.
Notification of the recall will begin in January. Vehicle owners will need to take their SUV to the dealers, who will replace and tighten up the idler pulley bolt.
