AT&T Will Pay $700,00 Fine and Issue Refunds
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has ordered AT&T, Inc. to pay a $700,000 fine and send its customers, who were overcharged on their smartphone plans, refunds.
The FCC investigated the company after it received numerous complaints about the U.S. wireless carrier switching users to its more expensive monthly subscriptions without their knowledge or consent.
The commission said AT&T is agreeing to give back excess charges smartphone customers paid after they were switched over to the most expensive monthly plan from the “Pay As You Go” system.
According to an AT&T spokesman, the error was found in 2010 and affects about 0.03 percent of the customers. Those folks who called the company about the error were reimbursed. The spokesman said most of the customers that were affected have already been taken care of.
The industry regulator said the FCC started its investigation last year and that the switch caused nearly $30 a month in additional fees, depending on how often the phone was used.
