Shocking High School Skit “Pokes Fun” At Racial and Sensitive
Three of New York’s Waverly High School students opted to re-enact the 2009 Rihanna and Chris Brown’s domestic abuse during a pep rally. Even more shocking than that, two of the three students painted their faces and bodies black.
But, this isn’t the first blackface show at the New York high school. Last year, a student painted his face black in a Tiger Woods’ portrayal. Both shows were a part of the yearly “Mr. Waverly” competition where male students fight to attain the loudest cheers to get the title.
Matt Dishler, Waverly alum, posted a picture of the skit on CNN’s iReport, which went viral and prompted numerous accusations regarding a school-wide racism and a total disrespect for domestic abuse and the seriousness of the crime. According to Dischler, nobody tried to stop the kids from doing the skit.
The school must approve all pep rally performances before they’re done.
Many folks see it as a racial as well as an insensitivity issue. And, in light of the backlash, school administrators are taking action and discussion the issue with the students.
Superintendent Joseph Yelich said the district wants to create a positive atmosphere through its activities. He said he’ll be working with administrators, staff and students to look at the present events and create future events that are in line with the district’s commitment.
Although many see the skit as disrespectful, some students are actually defending with one saying it was just all in fun and trying to make folks laugh. It wasn’t against the African American people in anyway, the Facebook user wrote.
According to the 2010 census, Waverly High School is predominately white, coming in at 97 percent.
