Telefonica Releases Tu Me – A Free Telephone and Messaging App
The Spanish telecom provider Telefonica has released an app that will allow users to call and send messages for free. Other than Spain, the app can also be used in other European countries such as the Netherlands. This may be the first time a European telecommunication company has introduced such an app.
The app works like similar to other applications, such as Viber for calling via VoIP and WhatsApp for sending real time messages. Users subscribing to Telefonica’s Internet data plan can use this app to call via VoIP and send messages as well. The company says that the app has been named Tu Me.
Tu Me is already available for iOS devices, but will also soon appear in Android, reports the provider. There are also versions being developed for BlackBerry, Symbian and Windows Phone. However the release dates for the non-iOS operating system versions are still not known. Interestingly enough Tu Me is one of the few apps where users can call and chat together in one app.
The step from Telefonica, through its subsidiary Telefonica Digital, is quite surprising, precisely because many providers lose revenue through the use of such apps. So did the heavy use of WhatsApp in various European countries caused a decline in revenues from SMS for the providers. This app is free, but additional services can be purchased later, according to the Spanish provider.
