3 Popular Baby Food Companies Head To Court Over Lead Concerns
Popular baby food companies – Gerber, Del Monte and Dole – are headed to court next week to determine if the lead levels in their products warrant warning labels for consumers.
The Environmental Law Foundation, in its 2011 lawsuit, alleges some of the foods and juices –peaches, pears, carrots and sweet potatoes – these companies make have enough lead in them to merit a caution label for consumers based on the Proposition 65 toxins warning law in California.
The non-jury trial, which will take place in Oakland Superior Court, will begin on Monday. Nestle’s headquarters are located in Switzerland, Dole’s headquarters are in San Francisco and Dole’s headquarters are located in Westlake Village. Del Monte and Dole refused to comment about the lawsuit and Nestle was not available for comment.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said nearly 500,000 American children between the ages of one and five years old have dangerous lead levels in their blood.
The CDC said even trace amounts of lead could affect their IQ, ability to listen and academic accomplishments.
